My neighborhood was apart of the flooding. There was chaos, people speeding in their cars to beat the water and get out. There were horns blaring at six am. We got out of our house to see cars rushing down our streets to get up higher, the neighborhood before ours was already flooding and people were evacuating. A woman screamed at me when I hurried out of my house that 'The water is coming'.
It came alright. It rose quickly and by seven am I had clothes in a bag, my electronics and books up as high as I could get them and then I was on the streets with my brother and mother making sure that everyone we could reach was awake and knew that the water was rising. It came fast the water, and it began to rush and when it got to my waist I had to turn back to my house.
Car's were trying to drive through the water, trucks pushing past and nearly flipping cars at the curbs because the water rippled out so strong. The water got so high that people couldn't drive through it anymore. I could see cars that were on still with the doors ajar and abandoned in the street. When the water came harder they began to hit into each other, a truck getting swept into the mix. You could hear the grinding of metal four houses away.
They brought helicopter down two streets away from me getting the people from on top of their houses or plucking out the people that were stuck. The rescue teams were tying ropes as lines to hold on to as they waded people out of the water and up higher.
I rescued a dog out of the water, no one was around to claim it, and no one really wanted to get waist deep in the water. I got the dog out and on dry ground.
There were a lot of people wading up through the water, and a lot of houses that were going to be destroyed. I never saw so much water on my streets before, it was like a river. We had a man that we've never talked to before taking shelter on our porch with his dogs. The flood really brought some people together, getting the neighborhood safe even when the water was flowing.
The water was still inches deep on my street, knee high on the next street over near nine am. School was not cancelled for anyone, so I did what I could got ready and picked my way through the crowed and EMS, firetrucks, and news vans to get higher up the hill to a friend who would take me to school with her.
It was hectic but I'm still at school. I saved a dog, I watched panic, and preparation. I saw people getting rescued, and people losing homes. It was a strange morning.
